The previous Republican candidate for Senate from Alabama, Roy Moore, refused to acknowledge the results of the race and filed a lawsuit today in an attempt to postpone the acceptance of his Democratic opponent, Doug Jones who managed to win the election by 20,000 votes.
According to Daily Wire Moore, whose campaign went of the track by sexual misconduct allegations, in his lawsuit claimed that he took a lie detector test after the election that according to him stands as proof for his innocence.
A number of women came forward during the course of the election for the Senate seat, accusing Moore of sexual misconduct while they were teenagers and he was in his 30’s. The Hill reported that “One woman says she was 14 years old when Moore touched her sexually. Another accuser said Moore assaulted her when she was 16 years old, pushing her head towards his crotch in a locked car,” notes The Hill.
Legally speaking even the polygraph’s results can’t change the results of the election.
At this point, only if allegations regarding the actual conduct of the elections came out, it might make some difference in favor of his wish to stop the election from being certified.
Moore even talked about the existence of possible instances of fraud in the process of the election.
In his suit he mentions some election “irregularities” and demands a further investigation into voter fraud.
The Associated Press reported : “In the complaint, Moore’s attorneys noted the higher than expected turnout in the race, particularly in Jefferson County, and said that Moore’s numbers were suspiciously low in about 20 Jefferson County precincts”
His team supplied a statement of one poll worker who claimed she spot licenses from Georgia and North Carolina among the voters who signed in to vote.
Earlier in the month, alarmed by a video featuring a Jones supporter who seemingly boasted about how people were coming from all over the state to vote for the Democrat, that went viral, the Alabama Secretary of Defense, John Merrill started to investigate possible fraud. From the Moore campaign said that their purpose for the complaint was to get more time to conduct a thorough investigation.
Sam Coleman, the spokesman for Doug Jones said that the election is finished and it’s about time to carry on. Moore’s attempt to delay the certification did’t get any result.
From Fox News say that the Democrat, Doug Jones was certified on Thursday by Alabama’s secretary of state as the winner of the state’s Senate race. Less than an hour prior to the certification, a judge rejected Roy Moore’s last attempt to sabotage the election results.
His campaign alleged potential election fraud, earlier Thursday and required restraining order to keep Alabama’s canvassing board from certifying the Democrat’s win.The request was immediately denied. The Alabama Secretary of State, John Merrill said he had no proof of any voter fraud but would still look over any further complaints.
In his statement after the certification, Roy Moore still was unwilling to acknowledge the results and said it was a “fraudulent election.”
Moore claimed “I have stood for the truth about God and the Constitution for the people of Alabama,” continuing “I have no regrets. To God be the glory.”
